I walk the tide line and duck under a few winding, bone-white branches.
“Let’s make a bet,” Corbin says from behind me.
I come face to face with the bottom root system of a downed tree. I turn, and Corbin is already close behind me. He steps forward without hesitation, pushing me into a divot of the roots. With one hand, he grabs ahold of a root; the other, he plants beside my neck. I’m caged. He always knew it made my heart race, and it does the same now. A kickstart of adrenaline.
Corbin leans in.
He blends in with the night sky behind him so well, save for the twinkle in his eye. He always did come alive at night. “Give me a second chance. Let me prove to you that I’m not tying you down. Let me show you that if we were married, you could still be just as wild.”
